The Museum of Durham History is excited to announce the newest addition to its ongoing 100 Years of Duke: Names to Remember exhibit: Our History, Our Voice: Latinés at Duke. This student-curated banner exhibit, which lines the Museum’s sidewalk entrance, explores the significant yet often overlooked history of Latiné students, faculty, and staff at Duke University from the early 1900s to the present.

The exhibit’s FREE opening event is scheduled for Friday, January 17, at 6:00 PM at the Museum (500 W. Main St.), with an evening of celebration and reflection. Guests will enjoy refreshments provided by local restaurants and hear from speakers representing Duke University, and individuals who curated the exhibit. The event will also include presentations that reflect on the important milestones and moments in the ongoing story of Latiné engagement at Duke.

The exhibition provides an in-depth look at the complexities of Latiné identity at Duke, shedding light on both the challenges faced by the community—ranging from discrimination to institutional inequities—and the remarkable contributions they have made to the university and beyond. It also shares the personal stories, struggles, and triumphs that have shaped their experiences at Duke.

Our History, Our Voice was created by students from Dr. Cecilia Márquez’s Latinx Social Movements course and Professor Joan Munné’s Spanish for Heritage Learners course, who conducted archival research and oral histories in the spring of 2021. For the first time, this exhibition uses University Archives and interviews with Duke alumni, faculty, and staff to document the Latiné presence and impact at Duke.

Our History, Our Voice: Latinés at Duke is made possible with support from Copa Airlines, CT Wilson Construction, and Lucy & Bill Stokes. 100 Years of Duke: Names to Remember is sponsored by Duke University Centennial, First Horizon Foundation, The Forest at Duke, Fox Family Foundation, Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, Teer Family in honor of Nello L. Teer, Nello L. Teer Jr., and R. Dillard Teer, Ruth & Dr. Victor Dzau, and Duke Community Affairs.
