The first Art of Cool jazz music festival took place in Durham. The festival grew out of the Art of Cool Project, a non-profit organization founded by jazz trumpeter and educator Al Strong and Cicely Mitchell that aims to promote and preserve jazz-influenced music. In 2018, the Art of Cool Festival was sold to the DOME Group, a Durham and Detroit-based entertainment promotion company.
