North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) opened on the grounds of the former Watts Hospital. NCSSM is the nation’s first state-funded residential high school focusing on science, mathematics and technology. Since 2007, NCSSM is a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina system.
