Durham’s Jewish congregation dedicated the newly built cathedral-style synagogue on Holloway Street (depicted here in the 1950s) and took the name Beth El. The Orthodox Beth El evolved into a Conservative congregation, and in 1961, Judea Reform Congregation, the second Jewish congregation in Durham, formed. Today, the Durham-Chapel Hill Jewish Federation and Community Council unite Jewish communities in the area.
