Welcome to the Supporters of Durham 150 newsletter, designed to keep those interested in Durham’s sesquicentennial updated on all the planning activities surrounding the yearlong commemoration.

Durham 150 Staff Highlight

Of the Durham 150 staff, we’ve already introduced project manager, Gineen Cargo, and project assistant, Shadé Shakur. Gineen and Shadé have worked throughout the year to coordinate a grant program, 150+ events, signature events, sponsorships, marketing efforts and historical content. The final member of the Durham 150 team is social media specialist Alyssa Noble, who assists with social media efforts in addition to contributing to the sesquicentennial commemoration in other ways behind the scenes.

Alyssa is a modern dancer, choreographer and community organizer originally from Chicago. She moved to the Triangle in 2011 in pursuit of a close artistic community. Alyssa co-produces and co-directs A+A Dance Company with her artistic partner Allie Pfeffer. She also co-organizes Durham Independent Dance Artists, an organization that curates and markets seasons of independent dance in Durham.

As the social media specialist for Durham 150, Alyssa is thrilled to be building community, connecting folks to resources and celebrating the Bull City’s past, present and future. If you haven’t already, please be sure to follow Durham 150 on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Historical Note

 

As the City of Medicine (and as we work our way through celebrating the changemakers nominated by the Sesquicentennial Honors Commission), we thought it we’d take a moment to touch on our history of medical innovation. Did you know, for example, that Five Points Drug Company created BC Headache Powder in 1906 in Durham?

 

According to the Honors Commission’s report, Dr. Sharon Elliott-Bynum was born in 1957 in Durham and was a nurse, educator, consultant and community advocate for the healthcare of all. In 1995, she and her sister co-founded Healing with CAARE, Inc., a community organization on Broadway Street that began as a place to provide support, education and empowerment to individuals living with HIV/AIDS and their affected families. Today, it offers medical care and resources for a broad range of services.

 

Dr. Aaron McDuffie Moore was born during the Civil War to free parents, was educated in the local schools of Columbus County, and was declared a medical doctor at the age of 25 after completing his studies at Shaw’s Leonard Medical College in three years. In 1888, Dr. Moore came to Durham, where he became the first African American physician to practice and became a preeminent civic and philanthropic leader in the city. In 1895, he organized the Durham Drug Company in order to offer African Americans a much-needed drug store, and to train young pharmacists. In 1898, he co-founded what would become the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, Mechanics and Farmers Bank, and North Carolina Central University.
