History Groves - George and Mary Pyne
George and Mary Pyne thought globally and acted locally, and Durham benefited greatly from their joint advocacy for the environment, the arts and historic preservation. They were founders and long-time supporters of the Durham Arts Council and Preservation Durham, whose top awards for sensitive restoration are named in the Pynes’ honor. Mary was a founding member of Women-in-Action for the Prevention of Violence and Its Causes and joined her husband in decades of successful work on behalf of the Eno River Association.
