Help Preserve Durham’s History Groves

As we approach the end of our fiscal year, we’re reflecting on the many ways our community has come together to celebrate and preserve Durham’s rich history. One of our most cherished initiatives is the History Groves program, and we need YOUR HELP to ensure its future.

Since 2012, the Museum of Durham History has partnered with local organizations to establish small groves of native trees and plants in honor of the individuals, families, and groups who have shaped our unique community. These 18 beautiful groves offer serene spaces with seating for reflection, each marked with plaques that tell the stories of those honored. They are living tributes to our shared heritage.

Recent additions to the community’s History Groves include partnerships for new groves for Tom Krakauer at the Museum of Life and Science and for Rabbi Steven Sager at Beth El Synagogue. These groves, like all the others, provide a meaningful way to recognize those who have contributed significantly to Durham’s history, as determined by their friends, families, and neighbors.

However, maintaining the History Groves begins at a cost of $15,000 annually. This includes necessary landscaping and the replacement of weather-beaten plaques. We are currently laying the foundation for ongoing 2024-2025 programming like History Groves (more on that next week!), but we need your help to keep these historical treasures flourishing.

We are thrilled to share that the BIN Charitable Foundation, a longtime MoDH supporter and early champion of the History Groves, has generously contributed $7,500 towards this cause. Now, we aim to match their gift by the end of this month. Your support can make a significant difference!

Here’s how you can help:

DONATE: Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us closer to our goal. You can donate directly on our website or send contributions payable to the MoDH: PO Box 362 Durham, NC 27702.

SPREAD THE WORD: Share this email with friends, family, and colleagues who might be interested in supporting our mission.

VISIT AND REFLECT: Spend some time at one of our History Groves and experience the peace and history they offer.

By supporting the History Groves and the Museum of Durham History, you are helping to preserve the stories of those who have made Durham what it is today. Your gift ensures these spaces remain beautiful, informative, and accessible for future generations.

Thank you for being a part of our community and for your continued support. Together, we can keep Durham’s history alive and vibrant.

With gratitude,

Patrick Mucklow | Executive Director
