Grand Opening Line-up
Posted on October 3, 2013Wondering who’s in the Grand Opening History Parade? Curious about afternoon attractions? Here’s a sample of what to expect.
Everyone loves a parade!
Among those coming down Main Street in the 10am parade will be the Bull City Brawlers Roller Derby Team, costumed bagpipers, Durham’s own Tobacco Queen, and Civil War re-enactors. Rolling along with floats from Hayti Heritage Center, NC Pride Parade and Festival and Sam’s Quik Shop will be antique cars, a “biker bar” and Organic Transport vehicles – all to the beat of the Hillside Hornets Marching Band. Traveling from the Old Courthouse on East Main Street to the History Hub, this parade promises to be a group as eclectic as Durham itself.

And everyone loves a fun afternoon!
Between Noon and 5pm, emcee Jatovi McDuffie will introduce a musical potpourri including The Famous Jordanaires, NCSSM Jazz Ensemble, Blue Star Travelers, Kamara Thomas, TROSA Band, Heart of Carolina Chorus, Immaculata Catholic School Liturgical Choir, Durham Ukulele Orchestra and Durham Academy’s In the Pocket. A Bare Theatre acting duo and storytellers Dorothy N. Clark and Beverly Fields Burnett will keep you and your family spellbound with their words. Mr. Rainbow the Clown will make you laugh without a word at all. And the Bellan Contemporary Dance Theatre and the Bouncing Bulldogs may teach us some new moves. Wander the grounds and let cartoonist VC Rogers draw your caricature for a small Museum donation, and requested donations will be lower for subjects in historical costume. Get creative with the Durham Comics Project, learn from artisan demos of yesteryear skills, drop by the authors’ table for a signed book on local history, or pose as part of a historic photograph. And have we mentioned the raffles? Everyone who visits the History Hub exhibits will get a free ticket to enter one of four raffles with fabulous prizes, with extra tickets available for just $1.
Bring your lawn chair because we’re SURE you’ll want to stay for hours! Food trucks CJs Street Food, Joe’s Diner, The Parlor, and a Coca-Cola truck will be on site.
