Durham Day of Listening Nov. 10th at 6:30-8:30pm
Posted on November 2, 2012Join us for the Durham Day of Listening on Saturday Nov. 10 from 6:30-8:30pm at the History Hub (500 W. Main St.). There will be live storytelling, food and music, and information about gathering your own stories from friends and family members. Musical guests Family Sircle will be playing at 6:30pm and 7:30pm. Below are just a few of the storytellers who will be sharing a memory:
-Walter Brown is Emeritus Professor of Education and the first dean of the School of Education at North Carolina Central University.
-Michael O’Foghludha is Durham County Superior Court judge and life-long Durham resident.
-Charles Bailey is a trumpet player who has played with Durham soul musicians since the 1970s.
-Kirsten Mullen is a folklorist, art consultant, and founder of Carolina Circuit Writers.
-Jim Wise is a journalist and author of several books on Durham History.
-Nick Hawthorne-Johnson is a native Durhamite and owner of The Cookery
-Lynn Richardson is the librarian at the NC Collection at the Durham County Library.
-And, you? We’re saving a spot! If you have a 5 minute story about Durham’s past that you’d like to share, send an email with your name to info@museumofdurhamhistory.org. We’ll be drawing one name from a hat at the event and handing that person the mic for five minutes.
This event is free, but we’d appreciate a contribution large or small to our online fundraising campaign for the Story Booth, which will be launched at the event. The Story Booth is a recording booth that will be installed at the History Hub to allow Durhamites to record their stories about our community’s past. The resulting collection will be saved and archived in the NC Collection at the Durham County Library. 27 Views of Durham will give a portion of their sales on the book that evening to the campaign.
So, come on out, hear some great stories and music, and learn more about the Story Booth. And if you need an additional reason to come, Chirba Chirba will be selling their delicious dumplings out front. See, now you have no excuse!
