On Friday, February 7th, the Museum led a presentation on Durham Civil Rights for residents of The Forest at Duke. After a brief history on the work of Martin Luther King, Jr., Floyd McKissick Sr., Pauli Murray, and other activists who worked in Durham, the conversation included memories and anecdotes from the crowd about their own personal experiences with segregated spaces and the Civil Rights movement. One woman shared a story from her youth, in which she and her boyfriend attempted to sit in the balcony of a movie theater for a romantic rendezvous, but were denied access due to it being “the colored section.”
Presentations such as this one are always available to local organizations who would like our content to be brought directly to them. We are eager to share history with those that might not have the means to visit the Museum physically. Reach out to info@modh.org if you’d like to schedule a visit from us!
