Celebrating Black History Month with the Girl Scouts
Posted on February 15, 2024We were asked to speak to Girl Scout Troops 3414 & 1127 on Monday, February 12th, about Civil Rights in Durham, in celebration of Black History Month. The girls listened attentively as we took them all the way back to the beginning and talked about Stagville, Black Wall Street, Pauli Murray, Floyd McKissick Sr., and finally the important role Martin Luther King Jr played in the creative protest of segregation. The girls helped give perspective on this sometimes emotionally difficult history, and we agreed by the end of the night that it takes bravery to disrupt the status quo and that it can be done through peaceful action and perseverance.
