The October 12th Grand Opening of the Durham History Hub, first home of the Museum of Durham History, will kick off with a History Parade through downtown Durham.

We anticipate beginning the parade at 10am on East Main Street near Golden Belt. The parade will proceed down Main Street, past a media post/reviewing stand at Corcoran Street, and end at the History Hub at 500 West Main St. by 11am.
Among participants already committed are several high school marching bands, a group of Civil War re-enactors, a women’s roller derby team, a kids jump rope team, and floats highlighting Duke Homestead, Hayti Heritage Center, several businesses and the Museum itself. We’re working to round out the lineup to a total of twenty or more.
The parade will reflect the tone of the entire Grand Opening Day – fun, casual, and maybe a little unexpected — kind of like Durham itself.

We’re looking for help in creating banners for each of the groups in the parade to ensure recognition and to lend the parade some consistency. A member of each participating group would carry the group’s banner. In keeping with the parade’s fun vibe, the banners will be handmade by volunteers from donated materials; we’re working now on securing a large roll of banner material and other items needed for decorating the banners. General specs will be provided — banner size, wording, etc. – but there’ll be a lot of room for creativity. Key to the banners’ development will be the vision and expertise of members of Durham’s artist community. Their help is needed to work with volunteers to design and assemble the banners; we’re working to set up an evening workshop, probably in September, in a central location to carry out the banner assembly.
