Jackie Robinson Drive

The street is one section of the Durham Freeway (N.C. 147) westbound access road, constructed in the late 1960s. Upon completion, the road was named Willard Street, because it connected with the three-block stub of Willard remaining after the freeway was build. In 1997, the city council changed the name at the request of Capitol Broadcasting, parent company of the Durham Bulls Baseball Club. A cross street between Blackwell and Mangum, on the north side of the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in 1995, had been named Jackie Robinson Place. Two years, later, when Capitol needed Robinson Place as parking space for its Diamond View office building, the company requested that Robinson's name be transferred to that part of Willard along the south side of the ballpark.
