An Evening of Stories & Songs with Friends

The Museum of Durham History was honored to attend “An Evening of Stories & Songs with Friends,” a magical night hosted by the Durham Colored Library (DCL) at the Burroughs Wellcome Fund in Research Triangle Park on Friday, November 8, 2024. This unforgettable gathering celebrated Durham’s African American heritage, merging storytelling and song to deepen our community’s connection to its cultural roots.

DCL President Eileen Watts Welch (pictured below) captivated the audience with powerful stories that were beautifully complemented by the soulful voice of acclaimed singer Lois Deloatch and pianist Ernest Turner (pictured above). DCL, Inc., one of Durham’s oldest nonprofit organizations, has long been dedicated to uplifting African American narratives and providing a fuller picture of the American experience through its mission of storytelling. This evening was a testament to DCL’s vision, as Ms. Welch highlighted two significant partnerships that will carry these stories forward: the Museum of Durham History (MoDH) and the Museum of Life and Science (MLS). Both partnerships promise to foster community engagement, expand cultural outreach, and preserve the history that defines Durham.

One key focus of DCL’s collaboration with MoDH is the “Sharing Our Stories” project, which will bring together oral histories from Durham’s Black residents. This new initiative aims to preserve the unique memories and life experiences that have shaped the Durham community over the past century, creating a lasting archive that will resonate with future generations. The partnership aligns with MoDH’s commitment to using personal stories to explore Durham’s diverse history, enriching our shared understanding of the community’s journey.

Alongside its work with MoDH, DCL has also joined forces with the Museum of Life and Science to promote access and inclusion through dynamic programming. This partnership will feature events such as story time at the Museum, MLS’s Black Excellence in Science program, and exposure to DCL’s Techies4Tomorrow™ initiative, a gamified approach to inspire the next generation of Black STEM professionals. By weaving together science and storytelling, MLS and DCL are making STEM education more relatable and accessible, ensuring every young mind in Durham feels empowered to pursue science.

This evening was more than a performance—it was an experience of unity, shared purpose, and commitment to expanding access to Durham’s rich history. The Museum of Durham History is proud to stand alongside DCL and MLS in this important work, celebrating the stories that connect us all and preserving them for the future. With the spirit of “An Evening of Stories & Songs with Friends” echoing in our hearts, we look forward to continuing this journey, fostering community engagement, and lifting up the voices of Durham.
