TNVLC Volunteer of the Week: Ruth Dzau!
Posted on January 30, 2025The Museum of Durham History is thrilled to see board member Ruth Dzau featured as the Volunteer of the Week from The Triangle Nonprofit & Volunteer Leadership Center!
Ruth Dzau has been an integral member of the Museum of Durham History’s Board of Directors for many years, bringing a wealth of experience from her extensive civic leadership roles in communities such as Boston and Palo Alto. Since relocating to Durham in 2014, she has immersed herself in the local community, volunteering with numerous nonprofits, including The Center for Child and Family Health, Triangle Community Foundation, Made in Durham, Durham Rotary, N.C. New Schools, and the N.C. Symphony. In recognition of her civic and social contributions, Ruth received the Duke Energy Citizenship and Service Award in December 2014.
Ruth firmly believes that being a good citizen entails understanding both a community’s current needs and its history. She recognized a significant gap in Durham’s collective understanding of its historical events and the individuals who have shaped its evolution. This realization led her to view her role on the Museum’s board as a unique opportunity to contribute to preserving and promoting Durham’s rich history.
In her capacity as a board member, Ruth has been instrumental in the Museum’s growth, offering innovative ideas, strategic planning, and effective execution. Her ability to inspire and engage donors, as well as cultivate meaningful relationships within the community, has been pivotal in securing vital support for the Museum’s mission.
Ruth and her husband, Victor, who leads the National Academy of Medicine in Washington, D.C., enjoy spending time with their family in Durham and in her native Northeast. Her personal passions include traveling, history, and art, which align seamlessly with her dedication to the Museum’s mission.
Through her unwavering commitment, energy, and advocacy, Ruth has made a lasting impact on the Museum of Durham History and the broader community, ensuring that Durham’s stories are preserved and celebrated for generations to come.
