Family Ties with the Faces of Duke

The Museum of Durham History was awash in heartfelt moments during the Names to Know banner exhibit, which was on view from September until mid-January. This special showcase, part of the Museum’s commemoration of 100 Years of Duke: Names to Remember, highlights some of the individuals whose lives intersected with both the University and the local community. The exhibit is a powerful tribute to some of the many people who have shaped Duke and Durham over the past century.

Family members, friends, and community members made a point of stopping by to see their loved ones honored in this unique setting. For some, it was an opportunity to relive cherished memories; for others, it was a chance to learn more about how the contributions of their ancestors or mentors fit in with the greater Durham environment. The exhibit banners, which featured a mix of portraits and brief descriptions, created a meaningful space for connection and recognition.

Since opening its doors in 2013, the Museum of Durham History has been dedicated to spotlighting local stories, and the 100 Years of Duke exhibit is no exception. It underscores the deep connections between the University and the surrounding community, celebrating the individuals who have contributed to both. By focusing on personal narratives, the exhibit offers a more intimate and inclusive view of history, one that resonates deeply with its visitors.
