¡Viva Latinés at Duke!
Posted on January 20, 2025
On Friday, January 17, the Museum of Durham History hosted a memorable opening event for its newest addition to the 100 Years of Duke: Names to Remember exhibit. Titled Nuestra Historia, Nuestra Voz / Our History, Our Voice: Latinés at Duke, this student-curated banner exhibit highlights the significant contributions and stories of Latiné students, faculty, and staff at Duke University from the early 1900s to today.
The evening was a perfect mix of celebration and connection. Duke students, local community members, and supporters mingled while enjoying tasty bites generously provided by Koki – Durham (because who doesn’t love good food at a good event?). The atmosphere was buzzing with energy as the student curators shared their insights about the stories behind the exhibit. Their remarks gave a personal touch, highlighting the milestones and moments that have shaped Latiné history at Duke.
One of our exhibit sponsors, Dave DeFossey from Copa Airlines, spoke about how delighted the company is to have started nonstop flights from RDU to Panama City, and how committed they are to supporting their hub communities. (Corporate sponsor CT Wilson Construction was not able to join us that evening, but we are grateful for their generous support nonetheless!)
The night wasn’t just about learning—it was also about celebrating. Guests laughed, shared stories, and soaked up the vibrant sense of community. This event wasn’t just an exhibit opening; it was a chance to honor and amplify voices that have often gone unheard, reinforcing the Museum’s mission to elevate diverse voices and untold stories in our community.
If you missed it, don’t worry! The exhibit will be up for 24 hour viewing on colorful banners outside the Museum until late-April, so stop by and check it out. Trust us, you’ll leave inspired.
