The Museum of Durham History and Beth El Synagogue invite you to join friends, family, and the many whose lives were touched by the late Rabbi Steven Gary Sager for a celebration of his immense impact on Durham’s Jewish community and beyond. On Sunday, April 7 at 2PM, we welcome you to help dedicate the newest History Grove in the Amen Garden located at Beth El (1004 Watts St. Durham, NC), honoring the esteemed Rabbi Sager. This event marks a significant milestone in recognizing Rabbi Sager’s profound impact on the Durham Jewish community and beyond. This event is free and open to the public.

Speakers at the dedication ceremony will include remarks from representatives of Beth El Synagogue, the Museum of Durham History, Duke University, and the faith community at large– Dr. Eric Meyers, Leslie Winner, Rev. Katie Crowe, Sophia Chitlik Abram, Patrick Mucklow, and Rabbi Daniel Greyber. Following the program, attendees are invited to enjoy refreshments, where Museum staff and volunteers will be available to guide small groups through the History Grove and Amen Garden.

Since 2012, the Museum of Durham History has partnered with various local organizations and grassroots groups to establish small History Groves throughout the community. These groves, consisting of native trees and plants, serve as tributes to individuals, families, and others who have made significant contributions to shaping Durham’s unique community. Each site includes seating for visitors to pause and reflect, along with a durable marker bearing the name of the honoree.

The Amen Garden, adjacent to Beth El, is a fitting tribute to Rabbi Sager’s passion for teaching and his love of Hebrew poetry. Among his many accomplishments include the founding of Sicha, an organization which promotes the ongoing dialogue between classical Jewish texts and lived experience.

Guests are encouraged to RSVP for the event by emailing: pmucklow@modh.org
