Get Involved - Volunteer
Do you believe that history is relevant to understanding Durham today? Do you think preserving and sharing our individual stories helps us learn from each other? Join our team of dedicated volunteers and help us share Durham’s stories!
There are several ways to get involved with the Museum of Durham History.
Front Desk volunteers play a key role at the museum by facilitating and interpreting exhibits and programs to our visitors and assisting the museum staff. As the face of MoDH, Front Desk volunteers ensure that visitors have a consistent and meaningful experience. Our Core Front Desk volunteers commit to a 3-4-hour weekly shift during the week. Our Weekend Front Desk volunteers are expected to commit to a 2-3-hour shift once or twice per month during the weekend. Read the full JOB DESCRIPTION of Front Desk volunteers and APPLY.
We are currently also looking for a Social Media volunteer. Read the JOB DESCRIPTION and APPLY.
MoDH’s volunteers are community members who are passionate about Durham’s history. Their dedication, talent, and skills are invaluable to MoDH and critical to fulfilling our mission. By providing support, expertise, experience, and ideas, volunteers are an integral part of MoDH.
In the 5+ years I have volunteered, I have met many interesting people and have become more familiar with a much different way of life than the way I grew up in Chicago. For example, I have met veterans of local civil rights protests during my shift; they were fascinating to talk with. – MoDH volunteer Sue Andresen
Our commitment to volunteers is to provide meaningful experience in an environment that is friendly, comfortable, educational, and fun. All volunteers complete a brief organizational orientation and procedural training before their start working with MoDH.
As someone who recently moved into the area, I find my volunteer time at the museum a wonderful way to connect with Durham residents and visitors while also learning about the fascinating and rich history of Durham! – MoDH volunteer Michael Del Tufo
