Pauli Murray (1910-1985), civil and women’s rights activist, lawyer, poet and priest, published her compelling memoir Proud Shoes: The Story of an American Family, in which she relates her grandparents’ struggles in Jim Crow-era Durham. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Murray was raised by her aunt Pauline Fitzgerald and maternal grandparents Cornelia and Robert Fitzgerald in Durham.
