Umstead Street

Umstead Street was built prior to 1913 as the Hayti area grew with Durham's expanding African American population. It is named for J.N. Umstead, landowner whose tobacco field the street crossed.

By 1925 Umstead extended from Grant Street west to Fargo. Its intersection with South Roxboro Street was closed during Roxboro Street's reconfiguration in the 1970s; a segment between Roxboro and Scout Drive is now "East Umstead".
