Stanford Leigh Warren

Stanford Leigh Warren (1860-1940) resided in the 600 block of West Chapel Hill Street in the 1920s and 1930s. Warren was a prominent African American physician and businessman, co-founder of the Lincoln Hospital and of Mechanics and Farmers Bank. In 1933, he donated $4,000 for construction of the Durham Colored Library, North Carolina's first public library for African Americans. The library, recently remodeled, bears his name.
