Stone Hackney Markham House

The Queen Anne house at 204 North Dillard Street is one of only two homes remaining from Dillard Street's heyday as home to the city's commercial elite. It was built in 1890 for merchant William H. Stone and was later owned by Durham Mayor and Durham County Attorney Edward C. Hackney.

Hackney's daughter married Charles B. Markham, Duke University mathematician and treasurer. His son, attorney Charles B. Markham Jr., was Durham's mayor from 1981 through 1985 and resided in the house until the early 21st century. The house remains a private residence.
