R.N. Harris Elementary School

Built in 1968 and remodeled in 2003, R.N. Harris Elementary School is named for the first African American elected to the Durham city council (1953) and to be appointed to the former Durham City Schools board (1958). The school was built during the year after Harris's death — ironically, with money from a bond issue he had opposed as a school board member. Harris Elementary currently has a 69,544 square feet to accommodate a student body of 356, on a campus covering more than 21 acres.
