North Carolina Central University

Durham educator and missionary James L. Shepard opened the National Religious Training School and Chatauqua in 1910 on land donated by Brodie L. Duke. Taken into the state university system in 1923, it became the nation's first state-supported liberal arts college for African-Americans. Its name was changed from "North Carolina College" to "North Carolina Central University" in 1969.
