Named for two of the founders of N.C. Mutual Life Insurance Co., John Merrick and Aaron Moore, Merrick-Moore Elementary School opened in 1951 and, after renovations and addition in 1953, 1958 and 1981, has more than 103,000 square feet — largest of Durham's elementary schools. Merrick-Moore's official student capacity is 563, and its grounds cover more than 16 acres.
