Major

The bronze bull statue in CCB Plaza is nicknamed "Major" in honor of the late Central Carolina Bank chairman George Watts Hill. During World War II, Hill attained the rank of major during service in the Office of Strategic Services, the military services' joint intelligence unit and forerunner of the CIA.

In later life, Hill still favored the military honorific and, as he was a long-time patron and benefactor of the arts and Durham artists, the title seemed appropriate to Major's sculptors, Michael Waller and Leia Foushee - who created the bull in the George Watts Hill Pavilion for the Arts.
