Little River Elementary School's history goes back to 1934, when it opened with grades one through twelve for African American students in northern Durham County. Having later become an elementary school for all students, the old Little River school was closed in 1993, following merger of Durham's city and county school systems, and reopened that same year at its present location. Little River Elementary has an official capacity of 658 students, in an 83,600-square foot facility on a 23-acre campus. Its former campus is a privately operated community center.
