The Liberty Warehouse is the last of 13 tobacco auction houses that operated in Durham from 1872 through the 1987 season.

Since the downtown tobacco market closed, the Liberty has been used primarily for storage. In 2004 the Liberty Arts metal-sculpture studio and foundry opened in its southwest corner.
