Lakewood Shopping Center

Lakewood Shopping Center is a strip mall shopping center that opened in 1960 at the former site of Lakewood Park -- an attraction built in 1902 by the Durham Traction Co. at the end of its streetcar line.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Lakewood was a popular and successful operation, hosting two supermarkets, a dime store, and a department store. In 1966, the Center Theater relocated to Lakewood from its downtown Chapel Hill street location.

With Durham's growth, new, larger shopping centers in the suburbs and a major renovation and expansion of Northgate Shopping Center, Lakewood's prosperity has declined for several decades.
