Durham County Courthouse (under construction)
Durham County broke ground in April 2010 for a new Justice Center to replace the outgrown Judicial Building on Main Street.
The 11-story, $75-million building is meant to eliminate its predecessor's problems with inadequate numbers of courtrooms, conference rooms, holding cells, restrooms and elevators. It stands immediately south of the Durham County Jail and across Mangum Street from the Durham Performing Arts Center.
Completion is scheduled in 2012. The new building is to enclose almost 319,000 square feet, with a limestone and granite exterior. The interior includes 28 courtrooms.
